The guide
Why black works
Black gives the camera clean edges. It hides small creases, keeps lace patterns visible against skin, and does not shift color under warm lamps or cold ring lights the way pastels do. That is why our three Creator Ready kits are all built in black. If you are buying your first piece, a black lace set such as the Mirror Check Balconette Set ($72) is the most versatile start.
Black is also the color most likely to match the rest of your wardrobe, from a leather look jacket to heels you already own. That makes it easy to build looks that work both as lingerie and as part of an evening outfit.
Texture matters more in black than in any other color, because the color itself is plain.
Mixing two textures, such as lace with a vinyl corset, adds depth to an all black look.
Velvet is the fifth option and deserves a mention: in black it absorbs light completely and looks almost endless in a dim room.
Start with a base (a set or a bodysuit), add a structure layer (a corset, a harness or a garter), and finish with legs (fishnet or lace top thigh highs). The Lace Plunge Bodysuit with the Lace Garter Belt and lace top thigh highs is a complete look for $114. Every black piece is sized XS to 3X, and stockings come in One Size and Queen, which together cover XS to 3X; see our size guide.
Vary the textures between those three layers so the shot does not turn into one flat black shape.
